The Birches Resort

The Birches Resort on Moosehead Lake

Come see why The Birches Resort is one of the most complete and beautiful resorts in all of New England!

Situated on the western shoreline of Moosehead Lake we feature 15 rustic waterfront cabins, 6 exclusive private home rentals, Kozy Kabins (replacing cabin tents), wilderness yurts, rooms in the main lodge and rooms at The Riverview.

We offer casual lakeside dining and a lounge for our guests and visitors.

Bountiful activities for all seasons offer you and your family the fun and flexibility you deserve! There is a beach, large hot tub, dry sauna and a new fitness center for our guests.

Let The Birches & Wilderness Expeditions be your base for summer and winter activity!

Because we are the most complete resort in the Moosehead Lake Region, our guests can experience a more complete vacation. There are endless summer possibilities ranging from moose cruises, whitewater rafting, guided kayak or mountain bike eco tours to plane rides and Jeep tours!

To some, the fun only gets better as the temperatures cool down! The Birches offers some of the best on site cross country skiing in Maine and we have well groomed snowmobile trails in every direction. Ice fishing and snowshoeing are also popular winter activities, available right from your cabin's doorstep!

Looking to have some outdoor fun, but need a little help with gearing up or require transportation? The Birches Resort & Wilderness Expeditions offer transportation and/or gear for the purposes of unguided canoe or mountain bike trips.

We offer rental boats for guests and day visitors to explore Moosehead Lake or go fishing. Snowmobile, snowshoe and cross country skiing equipment are also available for rent.

All Points of the Compass Lead to Northern Maine Riding Adventures

Directions to The Birches Resort:

From Boston, MA & Points South and West:

Take I-95 North to Newport, ME exit 157 (formerly Exit 39). Turn left at the end of the exit ramp and take Route 7 North from Newport to Dexter (14 miles). Take Route 23 North & West from Dexter to Guilford (11 miles) and you will see signs to the Moosehead Lake Region. At the “5 corners” in Guilford, take a hard right. The Davis Furniture Store is on the right and the Mobil Station is on the left of the road you are to go on. Take Route 6/15 from Guilford to Greenville (26 miles). Make a left at the flashing light in Greenville and it is another 22 miles to Rockwood on Route 6/15. See below for directions to the Birches Resort once you arrive in Rockwood.

From Houlton, ME & Points North and East:

Take I-95 South to Howland, exit 217 (formerly exit 54). Take Route 6/155 from Howland to LaGrange (12 miles). Take Route 6/16 from LaGrange to Dover-Foxcroft (20 miles). Take Route 6/15 from Dover-Foxcroft to Rockwood (58 miles). See directions below for how to get to the Birches once you’re in Rockwood.

From Calais & Bangor, ME & Points East:

Take Route 9 West from Calais to Bangor (90 miles). Follow Route 15 from Bangor to Rockwood (90 miles; Route 15 becomes Route 6/15 in Dover-Foxcroft). Once you arrive in Rockwood, do not go into Rockwood Village. Proceed on Route 6/15. You will see the Moose River on the right (or left if you’re coming from Jackman). You will pass 2 general stores on the right and then come to a two-lane bridge on the right. Cross the bridge and take a right at the T intersection. Then take the paved road which turns to dirt, following the signs to the Birches Resort. It is approximately ¾ miles on the first road and another mile on the next. It takes five minutes to get to the lodge once you cross the bridge.

Go to the Office-Check in door and sign in for your lodging. If you arrive late and there is no one at the check in area, we will leave written directions for you in there or on the front door.
